Time capsule ideas for adults

Updated · 5 min read

Adults get the most from a time capsule when it holds ordinary, specific things: a playlist, a screenshot of your home screen, a prediction, a recording of your voice. Pick an open date between one and ten years away, add a few of the ideas below, and store a backup copy so the capsule survives a lost phone.

What is a time capsule for adults?

A time capsule is a deliberate message to people in the future, historically a sealed container buried at a ceremony or building; the Wikipedia article covers its history. For an adult it is mostly a message to yourself, or to friends and family, so the contents lean toward the personal and the mundane.

What did famous time capsules contain?

Public capsules lean toward the grand. The capsules buried at the New York World's Fair in 1939 and 1965 are meant to be opened in the year 6939, according to Wikipedia. The Crypt of Civilization at Oglethorpe University, built between 1937 and 1940, is not to be opened before 8113 AD. Their audience is strangers in a distant era.

A smaller example is closer to what you can do. The Detroit Century Box, sealed on 31 December 1900 and scheduled to open 100 years later, held photographs and letters from 56 residents, and some of them made predictions for the future. That is the adult version: a handful of personal items, a few guesses, and a date people can plan around.

What can I put in it?

Choose five or six.

  • A list of predictions for the open date
  • A letter that starts "Dear me on..."
  • Your current phone home screen
  • A playlist of what you listen to now
  • A voice note describing an ordinary day
  • A photo of your desk and a photo of your street
  • Prices of three things you buy every week
  • Your current job title and what you hope to change
  • A message to a friend that opens on their birthday
  • Group answers from a party
  • A photo of the people you spend most time with
  • A list of the apps you use daily
  • The headlines you remember from this month
  • A goal and your honest odds of reaching it
  • A recipe you cook all the time
  • Something you want to forgive yourself for
  • A short video tour of where you live
  • Your favorite memory of last year
  • A question for the person you will be
  • A word that sums up the year

How many items are enough?

Five or six well-chosen items beat thirty. A short capsule gets opened with attention, while a long one gets skimmed. If you have more, split it into two capsules with different dates, one for next year and one for five years out.

Mix the kinds: something you write, something you see, something you hear and something you guess. That keeps the opening varied and makes every minute of it different.

What questions work for friends and couples?

Use the same questions for everyone and keep them light. These suit a dinner or a trip.

  • What is one thing you are looking forward to this year?
  • Which song describes this month for you?
  • What do you think we will be arguing about a year from now?
  • What is the best meal we have had together?
  • Where will we be when we open this?
  • Name one thing you would like us to do before the open date.
  • What will be different about our group by then?
  • Finish this sentence: "I hope we never stop..."

How long should I wait?

One year gives a quick payoff and builds the habit. Five years shows real change. Ten is memorable but needs a backup plan. Sealday allows dates from tomorrow up to twenty years and shows a note for anything beyond ten.

Should the capsule be physical or digital?

A physical box can be held, but it can also be lost, damaged, or opened out of curiosity. A digital capsule can carry photos and voice and cannot be damaged, but it depends on a device or file surviving. Sealday's approach is to encrypt on your phone and lock the key with the public drand beacon; the explanation walks through it.

How do the two formats compare?

Many people do both: a box for objects and a digital capsule for guesses, voice and photos, with the same open date.

Physical boxDigital capsule
Photos and videoPrinted photos onlyPhotos, a voice note and a then-and-now pair
Can you peek?Yes, and it is temptingNo, the key does not exist yet
Main riskLoss, water, a house moveLosing the phone without a backup
Group versionPass the box aroundA Table, sealed on one phone
Surprise on openingStrong, you hold the objectsStrong, with a ceremony and a score

How do I store a digital capsule?

Keep it in two places. An iCloud Backup counts as one. A vault file in Files or iCloud Drive counts as another, and the backup page shows how. Put the open date in your calendar, and mark it as an event with the capsule's name.

How do I make a digital capsule step by step?

The hold matters. It slows you down for a moment so that sealing feels like a decision, not a tap.

  1. Choose For future me, For someone or A Table.
  2. Pick the open date: New Year, your birthday, in 1, 5 or 10 years, or any day from tomorrow to twenty years out.
  3. Add guesses, a letter, photos and a voice note. The free plan allows 10 guesses, one photo and a 30-second voice note.
  4. Review the summary, then hold the seal for 2.4 seconds.
  5. Add the open date to your calendar from the capsule screen.
  6. Export a vault file and save it outside the phone.

What happens if I open a capsule early?

With a physical capsule, nothing stops you, and the cost is the surprise. The ceremony is gone once the lid is off. A digital capsule can enforce the wait.

In Sealday, a capsule you sent cannot be opened early by anyone. A capsule for yourself has one emergency exit: type OPEN EARLY, wait 24 hours, and the capsule opens with an "Opened early" stamp that stays on it. You can cancel during the wait and keep the capsule sealed.

How do I make a capsule that still makes sense in ten years?

Explain what felt obvious. In ten years you may forget which friend "the Captain" was, what the app on your home screen did, or why a song mattered. Write full names once, add a date to each item, and put a coin or a keyboard in a photo of your desk for scale.

Record the voice note somewhere ordinary, with the kitchen noise left in. The background is part of the memory. Finish with one question you cannot answer today, so the opening has an open end.

Can I make one with other people?

Yes. A group capsule works well at a wedding, a trip or a New Year party. See Tables for a pass-the-phone version, or send a capsule to a friend to open on their birthday.

Which ideas suit which occasion?

Match the contents to the moment.

OccasionIdea
New YearPredictions and a group Table
BirthdayA letter, a photo and a voice note
New jobGoals, fears and the salary you hope to reach, kept private
Moving abroadA video tour of your street and what you will miss
Wedding or tripMessages from guests, opening on the first anniversary
Finishing a projectWhat you learned and what you would do differently

What mistakes should I avoid?

A few common ones.

  • Putting in things you cannot replace without a copy.
  • Choosing a date so far away that nobody remembers the capsule.
  • Including passwords or private data. They age badly and can leak.
  • Forgetting to note the open date somewhere.
  • Making it too serious. Ordinary details are what you will enjoy.

Where does Sealday fit?

Sealday is one way to do a digital capsule. It handles the sealing, the date and the opening ceremony, and it asks you to grade your guesses. Everything stays on your phone, with no account. If you prefer a physical box, the same ideas work; just write down the date.

What should I check before I seal?

  • The open date is in my calendar.
  • Every item is something I could not easily recreate.
  • The capsule contains no passwords or account numbers.
  • A backup exists in a second place.
  • I told one person that the capsule exists.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good time capsule for adults?

A mix of predictions, a letter, a voice note and a few photos of ordinary life. Specific beats grand.

How long should an adult time capsule stay sealed?

One to ten years. One year is easiest to start with.

Can I make a digital time capsule on my phone?

Yes. Sealday seals guesses, a letter, photos and voice on your iPhone and locks them with a public time beacon.

Is there a risk of losing a digital capsule?

Yes, if the device is lost and there is no backup. Keep a backup or a vault file.

What happens if you open a time capsule early?

A physical one just loses its surprise. In Sealday, a capsule you sent cannot be opened early, and one for yourself needs a 24-hour wait and keeps a permanent Opened early stamp.

How many things should go in a time capsule?

Five or six. A short capsule gets opened with attention, and you can make a second one for a different date.
