Couples time capsule ideas

Updated · 3 min read

A couples time capsule works when each person writes alone and the two sets of answers are opened together. Pick an anniversary a year out, answer the same ten questions separately, add a photo of your week, seal both, and read them side by side over dinner.

Why answer a couples capsule separately?

If you write side by side, you will edit each other. One person says "we will travel more", the other nods, and the sentence becomes a compromise that says nothing. Writing apart keeps each voice honest, and the best part of opening is seeing where the two of you pointed in different directions.

Set a timer for twenty minutes, sit in different rooms and put your phones on silent. When both entries are done, seal them with the same date. That is the whole technique.

When is the right date to open it?

The first anniversary suits most couples. A move, an engagement or a new baby also makes a clean before and after. Pick a date that you will both be free on, because the opening is a small event and not a notification.

Longer waits give a bigger contrast but need a plan. Five years is a good second capsule once you trust the habit, and anything beyond ten asks for a backup file stored in two places.

Which ten questions should each of us answer?

Use the same list and keep each answer to a sentence or two.

  • What is one thing I love about us that I never say out loud?
  • What do I worry about most right now?
  • What do I think we will argue about next year?
  • Where will we be living on our open date?
  • What is the best meal we have cooked together?
  • What tradition do I want us to start?
  • What is a small thing I want us to do more often?
  • Which trip do we take next?
  • What will we be laughing about that has not happened yet?
  • What is one question I want my partner to answer on opening day?

What can we predict together?

Make a short joint list of guesses and mark each one Sure, Maybe or Wild guess. They are good for settling small debates before they start. Will the plant survive? Will we adopt something with fur? Who will cook more? Your answers are graded on the day, so a clear guess beats a clever one.

In Sealday you can use a starter such as "A friend we will visit:" or "The family tradition I will keep:" from the four decks of sentence openers, or write your own. The predictions page explains the tags, and the guide to scoring predictions shows how to mark them without arguments.

How do we seal two capsules in Sealday?

  1. One person opens Sealday, taps Seal, chooses For future me and sets the open date.
  2. They write their letter and guesses, then hold the seal.
  3. Pass the phone, or use a second iPhone, and repeat with the same date.
  4. Or create a Table for two. Free Tables hold up to four people, and each of you answers the same prompts on one screen, with the other turned away. See how Tables work.
  5. Export a vault file so the capsules survive a lost phone. The steps are on the backup page.

Can we send a capsule to each other?

Yes. A capsule for someone opens on their date and nobody can open it early, including you. Write one for your partner's birthday, seal it and send the link, with a letter of up to 1,500 characters and up to ten guesses. A sealed file can add photos and a voice note and needs Sealday Plus. The recipient can reply with Seal one back, which is a nice way to keep a conversation going over a year. The full flow is on the send to a friend page.

One caution: a link is not tied to a person. Send it only to the one you mean.

What should we leave out?

  • Anything about a third person. A capsule is a poor place for gossip.
  • Complaints you have not said aloud yet. Say them first.
  • Money outcomes, health and other sensitive guesses. Sealday's starters avoid them for a reason.
  • Promises that work as threats, such as "if we are not engaged by then".
  • A schedule of how the relationship should go. Describe what you notice, not what you demand.

What does opening day look like?

Choose an unhurried evening and cook something you made the last time. Open both capsules in the same room. Read the letters first, then the guesses, and take turns marking your own. The score is a bonus, and the real prize is the difference between two accounts of the same year.

Take a "now" photo to pair with the "then" one if you made it, and decide on the next date before you close the app. Many couples find that a yearly capsule on the anniversary becomes the one tradition that lasts.

Frequently asked questions

What do couples put in a time capsule?

Separate letters, a few shared guesses, a photo of an ordinary day, a voice note and a playlist from the year.

When should a couple open a time capsule?

On the first anniversary is a good default. Moves, engagements and new babies also make clean dates.

Can my partner read my entry early?

Not if it is sealed. A capsule opens only when its date arrives. For your own capsule there is an emergency exit with a 24-hour wait, which leaves a permanent Opened early stamp.

Can we do this with one phone?

Yes. Seal one capsule each on the same phone, or create a Table for two and answer the same questions with the screen turned away.

Is Sealday only for couples?

No. It handles personal capsules, capsules for a friend and group Tables, and each works the same way.
