New Year resolutions vs predictions

Updated · 3 min read

A resolution is a promise about what you will do. A prediction is a guess about what will happen. Resolutions fade because nothing checks them. Predictions stay honest when you seal them and grade them a year later. Use both: resolve a few things, predict many, and score yourself on January 1.

What is the difference between a resolution and a prediction?

A resolution says "I will run three times a week." A prediction says "I will have run a 10 km race." One states an intention, the other states an outcome you could verify in December. The New Year's resolution is an old tradition of promising self-improvement at the turn of the year, and the idea has stayed the same while the tools changed.

The difference matters because outcomes can be checked and intentions get reinterpreted. If you forget a resolution, nobody notices. If you write a prediction and seal it, you meet it again with a date on it.

Why do resolutions fade?

Three reasons come up often. They are vague ("get fit"), they are private so no one asks about them, and they come with no moment of review. By March the original wording is gone, and by December the story is "I did most of it".

Predictions fix the third problem by design. They give the year an exam on a known date. They do not fix the first problem automatically, so write each one as something a stranger could mark.

How do the two compare side by side?

What do good examples look like?

Notice that the strong versions name a thing, a date or a person. Sealday's starters avoid health, money outcomes and other people's private matters, which is a good rule to copy on paper too.

Can I use both?

Yes, and the pairing is stronger than either alone. Write three resolutions and ten predictions. Make at least two predictions about your resolutions ("I will still be doing it in June"), and the rest about the world around you: prices, songs, group chats, trips.

Predictions about things you do not control are the safest ones to enjoy. Nobody feels guilty about guessing the wrong word of the year. They also teach the lesson of calibration quietly, which how to get better at making predictions turns into a skill.

How do I do it in one evening?

  1. Write three resolutions on paper and read them out loud once.
  2. Open Sealday and tap Seal, then For future me, and choose the New Year chip. It opens at 00:00 on 1 January, local time.
  3. Finish ten sentence openers from the Life, People, Around me and Silly decks, such as "The song on repeat:" or "I'll finally...". Free capsules hold up to 10 guesses.
  4. Tag each guess Sure, Maybe or Wild guess. The tags appear only on the scorecard.
  5. Add a one-paragraph letter and a photo of your desk.
  6. Hold the seal. Put the resolutions in the letter if you want them graded too.

How do I grade the year?

On the open date, mark each guess Called it, Kind of or Missed and add a short note. Then read your three resolutions and mark those with the same three labels. Sealday shows a score such as "You called 7 of 10", and a miss is shown in neutral grey rather than red. See how to score your predictions for rules on partial credit.

Count both. A year in which you missed two resolutions and called seven predictions tells you something different from the opposite, and neither is a verdict on you.

What if I would rather skip resolutions entirely?

Skip them. Predictions on their own already change behavior, because writing "I will still be working here" makes you notice how you feel about work in July. A sealed list of guesses is a gentler way to ask yourself questions, and it does not require you to treat a calendar date as a deadline.

If your group likes the idea, run it as a game: a Table gives everyone the same five prompts, hides the answers until the reveal and ranks people at the end. The New Year predictions for friends guide has fifteen questions ready to use.

Frequently asked questions

Are predictions better than resolutions?

They do different jobs. Resolutions drive habits. Predictions help you see your patterns and stay honest, and they come with a built-in review.

Can I put my resolutions in a Sealday capsule?

Yes. Write them in the letter, or phrase them as guesses such as "I will still be doing this in June".

How many predictions should I make for the year?

Ten is a good number. Free Sealday capsules hold up to 10 guesses, and Plus raises it to 30.

When does a New Year capsule open?

At 00:00 on 1 January, local time. New Year and birthday capsules are the yearly ritual and are always free.

What if I miss most of my predictions?

That is useful data. Most people discover they were too sure about big events and too shy about small ones.

Do predictions replace goals?

No. Goals describe what you want to do, and predictions describe what you expect to happen. Keeping both in one capsule lets you see the gap between wanting and expecting.
